Jim is a lifetime Iowa City resident.  He graduated from West High School (1973), University of Iowa (B.A. in Religion 1977) and the University of Iowa Law School (J.D 1980) and has practiced law in Johnson County

since 1980.

 

Jim has a general practice with a special focus on real estate, probate, estate planning, business law and taxation.

 

Professional activities and memberships include the Johnson County Bar Association, Iowa State Bar Association, Iowa State Bar Probate Trust & Estate Planning Law Section, Iowa State Bar Real Estate and Title Law Section, American Bar Association and

Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.

 

Jim is currently serving on the Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors, MECCA Board of Directors, various Condominium Board of Directors, and also has served on the University Of Iowa Alumni Association Board Of Directors and as Past President of the Association.

 

Jim married his high school sweetheart, Judy, and they have been married for 37 years.  Jim and Judy's family include adult daughters Laura and Heather, and son David, deceased (1981-2013).  Jim enjoys the outdoors, biking, hiking, traveling, participating in Habitat for Humanity International Builds and spending time in Door County, Wisconsin.

Jim is passionate about law, especially real estate and business law.

Jacqueline Maher

Jacqueline Maher is a native of the Iowa City area. Jacqueline brings ten years of combined paralegal, financial and managerial experience to the Houghton Law Firm.  She graduated from the Paralegal/Legal Assistant Program at Kirkwood Community College in 2004.  Her education and prior employment as a Litigation Specialist with GE Capital has provided her with knowledgeable experience in working with bankruptcy law, business law and contract law.  Jacqueline joined the Houghton Law Firm in 2012 and provides support for real estate, probate, and other legal matters, in addition to handling the bookkeeping for multiple homeowners associations and companies.

 

When Jacqueline is not at the office she is spending time with her husband Sean and son Bryce.  She enjoys running, backpacking and camping.

Jamie Kearney

Jamie Kearney is a native of Clinton, Iowa, and a long-time resident of Iowa City.  She earned a B.A. with High Distinction from the University of Iowa in 1994, and later received her Associate’s Degree in Paralegal Studies.  She has worked in the legal field since 2001, and is a member of the Iowa Association of Legal Assistants/Paralegals (IALA) and the National Lawyers Guild.  She joined Houghton Law Office in 2013 and provides support for real estate, probate, and other legal matters, in addition to handling the office management and bookkeeping.

 

In her spare time, she enjoys reading, watching documentary films, beekeeping and playing music with her husband, Matt.
